Monthly Vox: 16 (October/November/December) - Yes, I know...

Heyoo! After a short hiatus, I have returned, baring tidings for the New Year! I hope everyone got lots of paints and kits for Christmas and have been using any spare time to work through that pile of shame.

The last couple months haven't been particularly exciting or varied in terms of painting but I told myself that as long as I have something, it goes in the Vox, no matter how small. So here we are!

Black Templars (Commissions)

I received two rather large commissions of Black Templars during October and November. I was presumably in mind due to my practice with the scheme, having had painted several thousand points of Templars for my own army. The client requested, across two different commissions, that the three Stormraven Gunships and fifteen terminators be painted to a battle-ready standard. I am happy to say that I delivered. Dry-brushing Dawnstone over a black undercoat kept the job fast for me and cheap for the client, without sacrificing much fidelity. It was mostly a case of colouring in where needed followed by a few washes, then it was a case of tidying up any messy bits. All in all, a satisfying job!

Harlequins/Aeldari (Commissions)

Two more large commissions found there way to me in December, when I was tasked with getting two small combined armies battle-ready across two commissions. In total, these two commissions contained THIRTY-FIVE Jet-bikes and four vehicles. Both jobs made liberal use of my airbrush to achieve smooth gradients. However, I am not sure this was my best work and because of this, knocked off some of the price. Either way, the client seemed happy and this army went on to win a tournament in their hands. Clearly, that was my doing.

Astra Militarum ('Cadia Stands!' Box)

Having taken a step back from Uni, I finally had some time to paint some of my own models for what seems like the first time in months. I opted to grab the Cadia Stands box as a little early christmas present for myself and it's been great. The new kits are fantastic fun to paint and look great. It's also been nice painting something I get to keep.

I'm currently about half-way through the box, having painted two squads of Shock Troops, an Armoured Sentinel, and an Officer for my Command Squad. I've made starts on the rest of the box and you should be seeing it in the next Vox!

Closing Words

By now it should be obvious that consistency is not my biggest trait. Things have been a bit wobbly for me and I'm trying my best. I always make a point to never take this site so seriously that I stop enjoying it. I hope that, despite often going weeks or even months without a post or update, people still enjoy what I put out. As always, the other social media platforms for the site are a bit more active than so they're worth checking out if you like my stuff. I hope everyone has a fantastic start to 2023 and I'll catch you on the flipside.

Cheers,
Ryan

Primaris Chaplain Grimaldus! New Black Templar Release

As I mentioned towards the end of my consolidation post of all the current* Black Templar releases, along with the recent GenCon reveals, our favourite Chaplain would be worth the wait.

Grimaldus, the man who literally shouted the princeps of an Imperator Titan back to life, is back from his trip across the Rubicon. The famed reclusiarch is sporting an awesome new model, complete with Mk X power armour and his signature plasma pistol. While I'm not a fan of how weirdly he's holding his Crozius, the model still looks fantastic.

Grimaldus isn't the only one getting a makeover, however. His cenobyte servitors, each carrying a relic of his relatively shitty time inside the hive city of Helsreach, have also received awesome new models.

While, in my opinion, nowhere near as cool as the new Primaris High Marshal Helbrecht model, I'm still hyped as hell to see one of my favourite characters get a fresh plastic kit and will definitely be picking this guy up.

Grimaldus' stats are also something to consider going forward. Seeing as he is crossing the rubicon, we can most likely expect to see him gain and extra wound and possibly an extra attack. I am also expecting a bit of an aura rework for both himself, and Helbrecht. But I can hardly comment on that currently as we still have no stats for any upcoming templar releases besides the Pyreblaster.

So what do you guys think? Like Grimaldus' new model? Let me know over on my Instagram, @fistfulofbeans , or in the comments below.

Posts may be even more sporadic going forward as the university term begins for me. Stick around still! There's still plenty more posts on the way.

Cheers,

Ryan.

A First Look at The New Black Templar Marshal Weapon Options and Sprue

Hey all! Pretty interesting news today over on reddit.

After mishap with their Hexfire order, Reddit user u/jazzhandskreiger accidentally received the unreleased Black Templar Marshal model, fresh on it's sprue, in place of the recently-released Castellan Crowe model.

The reddit post also gives us a good look at what the sprue will look like for the new Black Templar Marshal, as well as giving insight into possible weapon and wargear options!

The wargear options I can discern from this sprue are as follows:

  • Power Sword
  • Power Axe
  • Combi-flamer
  • Plasma Pistol
I'm hopeful that this will be the first Primaris* Character we've had in a while that actually has flexibility in it's loadout options, allowing more of a mix-and-match, as opposed to set loadout variants.

One thing I am confused to see is a complete lack of closed-off helmet options, with the sprue appearing to only contain open helmets and empty heads. I will probably be putting a helmet/alternate head from my bits box on here, especially if it coincides more with Marshal Reinhardt.

This guy may just be the spiritual successor to the Black Templar Marshal of old. It's always great to see older models reimagined.

It's refreshing to see some actual wargear options on what is presumably a monopose kit. I'm looking forward to magnetising this guy or, alternatively, having some extra power weapon bits complete with chained wrists for my bits box.

Just a short post to quickly jump on this news! See you in the next one!

Cheers,
Ryan.

*Yes, technically he could still be firstborn. Especially since Primaris would not be caught dead with a combi-weapon but hey...

Warhammer 40K Black Templar Gen Con Reveals and MORE!

Hi all! Sorry for the lack of posts the past few weeks. Took a short break out while I got some things sorted for uni and I also turned 22!

Naturally, as soon as I take a small hiatus, Games Workshop decides to drop some absolute bangers for our boys in black. We've seen such a push for the templars over the last few weeks, so allow me to consolidate what we have so far, as well as what we might be able to expect going forward!

The Teaser

Back in July, we first saw a teaser that the Templars were getting some love in the form of a short trailer, featuring, what appears to be, the Emperor's champion kneeling over a shrine of sorts while the signature vows were recited. Check out the covering of that, here

New Primaris Emperor's Champion

Spoken about back in August, we first got a taste of what was to come with a brand-spanking-new model for the Emperor's Champion, most-skilled and best-equipped of a Black Templar crusade company. Check out some theories about that, along with my initial impressions, here

Primaris Initiate with Pyreblaster

The releases were bi-weekly at this point, with constant posts and reveals, including a new weapon and our first hint of Primaris Crusader Squads, the Primaris Initiate with Pyreblasters. Check out my post on that, here!

Black Templars Boxset

And now we have it, the crème de la crème reveal we all wanted to see! The Black Templars, for the first time in years, have their own dedicated boxset and, more importantly, a codex! I'll be covering the latter at a later date when we have more info since, weirdly, we havent seen much in the way of actual rules for the Templars like we did for other factions in the lead-up to their codex release, but alas.

For now, let's focus on the models. The box set features, what appears to be*:
  • The Emperor's Champion
  • Primaris Crusader Squad
    • 2x Primaris Initiate w/ Chainsword and Heavy Bolt Pistol
    • 2x Primaris Initiate w/ Auto Bolt Rifle
    • 2x Primaris Neophyte with Chainsword and Bolt Pistol
    • 2x Primaris Neophyte with Bolt Rifle/Bolt Carbine
    • Primaris Initiate with Pyreblaster
    • Sword Brethor with Power Sword
  • Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought (Most likely, the full multi-part kit)
  • Primaris Marshal with Plasma Pistol and Master-Crafted(?) Power Sword

I may be wrong on this, but this is what I can deduce from the image above, at least as far as models go. I initially assumed most of the models would be monopose with set loadouts until the dedicated kit came out but we have been promised a "ton of build options" so we shall have to see. My main concern is that they give us enough of each weapon to uniformly outfit our crusader squad with one loadout, rather than being forced to mix like the new Ork Boyz kit. Bad move, GW.

Based on the article over on the Warhammer Community, as well as the reveal at Gen Con, we can also expect to see:
  • An exclusive Codex featuring the brilliant third-edition artwork by the talented John Blanche
  • Datacards detailing Codex content like strategems and such.
  • A "massive" transfer sheet with 226 DECALS for the Black Templars! Sorry Mighty Brush...
The boxset is rumoured to be releasing some time in November, though we may see it sooner.

New Primaris High-Marshal Helbrecht Model

I'm lost for words at this new model of the High-Marshal, looking like it was ripped from the works of Mark Gibbons.

With his current model being finecast from a billion years ago, it's great to see this guy getting a new dedicated model. He also appears to be making the swim across the Rubicon Primaris, hopefully beefing up his stats to be more on par with what we would expect from a High Marshal.

His model even comes with two servitor simps, one to hold his combi-melta, and another to polish his sword (despite it still being impaled in the chest of an unfortune Ork). We also know he'll be arriving to crusade on a whopping 60mm base to accommodate them, making him one of the largest non-primarch characters in the current range. I'm looking forward to seeing how far he can push his juicy melee auras.

What Else?

Going forward, I think we'd all be ecstatic to see a new model for our favourite Chaplain, Merreck "Shout up to the Cathedral" Grimaldus. Part of me doesn't want to get my hopes up but Games Workshop seems to be going balls-deep with this release so our hopes may be fulfilled.

It would also be fantastic to see some of the new rules ahead of time since we saw it with other factions such as the lead-up to the Ork codex, though I may be asking too much. This is already the most love the Black Templars have seen in years.

A Quick Word

Hey all! Just a quick word from myself and the blog. As you may have seen in the post I put up a couple of weeks ago, we have an email list now! So if you don't want to create a blogger account, simply pop your email into the field at the bottom of any page on the site and you'll be able to register for alerts whenever a post goes live here!

All The Better To Purge You With: A Look At The New Black Templar Pyreblaster and Primaris Initiate

I'll try and contain my excitement so I'm not squealing like a little girl, but it really seems like Games Workshop are going balls-deep with the Black Templars right now. A couple of days ago over on the Warhammer Community, Games Workshop showed off the new model for a 'Primaris Initiate with Pyreblaster', along with the stats!

Just in case you weren't already convinced they were coming, here he is! The Primaris Initiate heavily implies the existence of Primaris Crusader Squads and, to top it off, the chains that bind this goofy weapon to this brother's wrist, along with the signature Maltese Cross on his helm and pauldrons, gives us our first look at what could be included within the Primaris Black Templar Upgrade Sprue.

Obviously we could have guessed the contents but it's nice to see it in the...flesh? On the flipside, the crest on the armour is not the standard imperial Aquilla, implying a dedicated kit. After all; they do not wear his symbol. They are his symbol.

A lot of people have complained (shocker) that the marine's hand is too close to the vents of the flamer. Now I'm not a techpriest, but don't those vent holes look like they spew horizontally out the sides? I'm sure our brother will be fine. Don't worry yourselves.

In signature Black Templar fashion, our boys in black have broke the knob off their wargear with the new 'Pyreblaster' flamer sporting a 15" range! Now while there was a little confusion in the beginning, since GW accidentally uploaded the wrong weapon stats, giving it D2 instead of D1, we do have the stats for this new Tyranid-griller:

The real question in my mind is; will this new weapon be equip-able by the every [Initiate] model in a unit, or will it just be a '1 per X models' type deal? I would love to see a 10-man blob of these chaps spewing out potentially more shots than Primaris Intercessors with Auto Bolt Rifle, with a crazy -2 AP in the tactical doctrine (assuming we keep access to doctrines).

I'd also love to see a themed stratagem based around Flamers that would accompany this weapon nicely. Perhaps extra damage or a minimum number of shots? We will have to see, going forward.

I'll try to keep you posted on any and all new releases the Black Templars receive in the lead up to their codex release in November. Stay tuned!

New Black Templar Emperor's Champion Announced!

And so it begins! As we all expected, and as I outlined in last month's post about it over here, the Templars are beginning to get their new models!

The first of our boys in black to get a fresh coat of paint is the famed Emperor's Champion, sporting all manner of fancy beads and purity seals to show off to all the filthy xenos and heretics-alike.

One of the interesting things to note about this model is it's scale. It doesn't appear to have been 'primaris-ized' as most of us would have guessed. This honestly comes as less of a surprise to me now I think about Castellan Crowe's new model for the Grey Knights, and how he maintained his standard firstborn appearance, albeit with much more primaris-esque proportions.

It seems as though Games Workshop are in no hurry to rock the boat by putting such iconic characters through a process that a large portion of the community disagrees with in-lore. Of course our new champion comes with the mandatory 'foot-on-rock' treatment we've come to expect. Either way this is purely speculation and, bar the topic of armour I will go into next, we have no way of knowing if this fella is Primaris (or not) until we see his stats and keywords. Onwards!

Another topic of note, it seems, is the armour. This appears to not align with any armour I recognise in the current 40K universe, despite having a very Mk4-looking power pack affixed to his back and sporting the iconic "ball thingies" that the vents are nested into. Does this confirm that the new Emperor's Champion will be firstborn, or is it simply a nod at his heritage? After all, my own converted Emperor's Champion, Reynauld, is very-much Primaris despite having the power pack of the original emperor's champion model. Again, only the datasheet will tell us these things.

Honestly, I love the look of the new sword and, while it's awkward rotation and the helm's slighly-elevated laurels turn me off slighly (combined with the god-awful positioning of the pistol holster), I am super excited for this models release. On an extra note, to paraphrase Chapter Master Valrak on his YouTube livestream earlier today, "Of the three new character models, the champion is the weakest in terms of looks" which, if anything, lets us know that if this is the low tide mark for our next few releases, we're in for a hell of a christmas!

On top of a sweet new set of models confirmed, we've also effectively had our boxset announced using the new GW pre-order system detailed over on warcom >>>here<<< . Sweet!

Anyway, that's it for now! This was just a short piece I wanted to spam out to celebrate and give some small opinions. Keep your eyes peeled for that post about the Crusade system from the Warhammer 40,000 Core Rules, as well as progress on my own crusade and painting. Have a good day everyone. Cya!

It's Happening! What to Expect from the New Black Templars Supplement, as well as What to Hope For

It's Finally Here, Brothers!

Well, it would appear that our boys in black are finally getting their long-awaited supplement, having not received their own book since 'Codex: Black Templars' back in 4th Edition. Valrak and his warp tendrils did not lie to us. I intend to briefly go over what we might expect from such a release, both in terms of models and rules, and what would be nice to have. Do note that this is mostly opinionated and very loosely based on the hints and sneaky gubbinz we as have accumulated as a community.

I'm honestly giddy writing this, having only been part of the hobby since roughly march last year, even I feel like I have been waiting too long. Emperor protect my fine brethren who have actually been playing since 4th Ed, relying on the rather-lackluster few pages we got in 'Psychic Awakening: Faith and Fury' that have only really served to make us hungry for more. I am excited to get into what this means for our Knights of Sigismund, as well as collecting the hobby in general.

I shall also say, going forward, I'll probably be name-dropping Chapter Master Valrak a few more times since the bulk of what we know has come from him and his sources. He's been pretty right so far but I wouldn't fault him if some things turn out to be less-than-real.

Expectations

So what should we expect from Codex Supplement: Black Templars? Well, obviously a litany of new rules and strategems, as well as modifications to existing ones, something I will only touch on lightly. We can also expect to see brand new likely-Primaris models representing our named characters (probably stood on rocks), completely with their improved stats and proportions. More on this later.

Note: While these are listed as Expectations, some of these may be a reach to some and many of them are not supported by hard evidence. I am simply using what we already have for other chapters, as well as a handful of wishful thinking to come up with conclusions. I am not a psychic by any means.

Combat Patrol: Black Templars

I would hope that, given it'd sell like hotcakes, GW would be gracious enough to grant the Black Templars a 'Combat Patrol' box, complete with a collection of discounted models and a shiny new Primaris Upgrade Sprue. This might not happen, seeing that, as of writing this, our founding Chapter, the Imperial Fists, are yet to get their own Combat Patrol.

That being said, I have some ideas for what to expect within the box:

Troops

There's a strong chance that, given they are the meat and potatoes of many a Black Templar force, a unit of Assault Intercessors will fill the 'Troops' slot of our patrol. On the flip side, our new Supplement may bring new rules for running our signature templar-exclusive troop choice, the Crusader Squad. However, this would likely be a new primaris variant, perhaps composed of Intercessors and Incursors rather than the traditional Tac Marines and Scouts. Again, I'm speculating and the troop choice will probably be the former.

Elites

Honestly, a no-brainer. I am adamantly sure that any boxset aimed at templars will come with a unit of at least three of these dudes. They scream Black Templar. I've been saying so since Indomitus was announced and they're honestly one of my favourite models out right now. 100% auto-include in any speculated Combat Patrol box setup. Bladeguard Veterans for the win!

Vehicles

Now, this assumes we'll get a vehicle as some of the other boxes have. After all, Combat Patrol: Deathwatch did not include a vehicle. This space could very well be filled up by a supplementary character or additional troop choice but were it to be taken up by a vehicle, I can almost assure you that it would be an Impulsor. However, we may have it subsituted for a Redemptor Dreadnought or Invictor Tactical Warsuit, to provide our frontline with some fire support before finally getting stuck in, themselves.

Characters

Now, this one is where it gets particularly juicy. Could we be seeing one of the shiny new named character models here? The Emperor's Champion? Helbrecht? Grimaldus? Unfortunately, signs point to 'No'. Seeing that almost none of the current combat patrol boxes contain named characters, the exception being Typhus in 'Combat Patrol: Death Guard', I would not expect our Combat Patrol box to be any different. We will most-likely get the Primaris Captain with 'Master-Crafted Power Sword and Relic Shield' from the Indomitus boxset, or a Primaris Chaplain, possibly on a bike.

Rules Rework (Obviously)

Now, the juicy stuff, rules. I would expect a variety of nerfs and buffs. After all, 9th Edition plays a little differently to how 8th did so it's only fair to expect a few changes.

We can expect a rework of some of our chaplain litanies, the main ones being 'Litany of Divine Protection', which I predict may be nerfed to a 6+++ FNP Aura, as opposed to a 5+++ FNP on a single unit, similar to an Apothecary's Narthecium, but with greater range. I'm not too happy with the idea, but I believe it could happen. I also have a sneaking suspicion that 'Vow of Retribution' will be modified in-line with 9th Ed to affect Combat Attrition tests in some way, as opposed to the current -2 Leadership.

As for strategems, we can expect to say goodbye to Devout push (again, not happy with the idea, but I have a hunch). Many players I have been against seem to have a hard time understanding just how it works and frankly, I imagine most Black Templar players are sick of bringing up that one Implausible Nature video explaining it, every time they're against someone who might not know our pious pals as well as we do. 9th Edition has clearly put in work to simplify the game somewhat and, whether or not you could consider this 'dumbing down' I am sure this strategem will either be scrapped or reworked beyond recognition.

A welcome change may be a slight rework of our Superdoctrine. 'Knights of Sigismund' while generally good at what it does, has minor caveats that put it slightly behind other chapters like the Space Wolves or Blood Angels. The problem with it is that it only activates on turns in which the unit fighting performed a charge. Whereas the aforementioned chapters get it in combat regardless of any conditions (so long as they're in the assault doctrine of course). It would be nice to see this restriction lifted for us.

Furthermore, it's entirely possible that, given the Black Templars are not a codex adherent chapter, we could get our own alternate set of Space Marine Doctrines in the form of 'Vows', possibly ones more oriented around melee. Of course this would prohibit us from using the aforementioned doctrines, similarly to how we are prohibited from using Librarians. More on Vows shortly.

As well as fresh new models (again, probably stood on rocks) our HQs can likely expect to see a small boost to their stats. If Chapter Master Valrak is right we can expect to see our HQs pick up an extra attack each, putting them on-par, if not better, than their nameless Primaris counterparts. I for one am excited to see Grimaldus have more than 4 wounds. Something about the 'Hero of Helsreach' taking the same number of hits as a Guard Commander is upsetting to me. But I digress...

Hopes

That's my forecast for the stuff we might expect to see. Now onto a couple of things I personally would love to get, but perhaps I may be reaching a little.

Dedicated Neophyte Models

With new models probably being added to the range for our important characters, I would love to see Crusader Squads get the Primaris treatment. Since Space Marine Scouts became an elite choice towards the end of 8th edition, they have become practically obsolete outside of their rightful place as neophytes within the ranks of the Templar Crusader squads.
As well as this, the current scout models are looking a little dated. Some members of the community have been able to work around this by using Necromunda's 'Palanite Enforcers' to represent the shorter slightly-less-armoured squires and, while I love how this looks, it would be great to see some dedicated models for them, in the same vein.

Vows

Another welcome addition to our Supplement would be the return of 'Vows'. Back in their old codex the Black Templars were able to make use of Vows, allowing them to choose a particular set of buffs to take with them at the start of every game, similarly to how the Adeptus Mechanicus make use of their 'canticles'. These vows would grant the player a particular buff, such as improving the strength of all units in melee, at the expense of attacking slower (4th Ed bullshit, you get the point). It would be great to see these make a comeback today.

Community Response

I asked the 'Implausible Nature' discord, a community built around the Black Templars, what they expected and hoped to see in the new Supplement. Thanks to Amof and CrazyTacos for offering up some of your hopes and expectations:

"I can't say that I expect a better assault doctrine, but I would hope for one." - CrazyTacos

I agree! It seems like auto-wounds on 6s in melee, while great, doesn't seem to get as much use as it could since it will only be active for the round in which the unit charged. I would like to see that reworded personally.

"I just hope Devout Push survives the new codex." - Amof

As much as I agree with you, it seems like GW has been simplifying a lot of questionable rules in an attempt to streamline the game. It's been getting progressively more drastic every edition and is why, at least in my opinion, it's hard to really use the black templars as aggressively as I would like to. I personally expect to see Devout Push stripped from our arsenal.

"I hope and pray that the new [Grimaldus] model looks good. If not, I'm gonna stick with my old model." - CrazyTacos

Absolutely! Grimaldus is one of my favourite Astartes characters and I would love to see him get the same treatment Calgar or Mephiston got. If we're lucky, we'll get some sweet new Cenobyte Servitors to go alongside him.

Conclusion

These are just some of the things I expect and hope to see. However, the pessimist in me expects to see 3 pages at the back of 'Warzone Octarius', but I'm fully riding the hype. It's been a rough year and we need this 😉 Again, strictly just my opinion. If you think differently or have anything to add, hit me up over on my Instagram or drop a comment below using Blogger's awkward system. Thanks for reading and cya!
